‘Celebrating Fifty Years of White’s printmaking 1960–2010’

Consummate Australian multi-disciplinary artist, Susan Dorothea White (1941–) opened her long-awaited print show in Braidwood on 12 November at FyreGallery. Local and international collectors were delighted by the 66 pieces selected to illustrate White’s fifty years of printmaking in this unique survey of her lithographs, etchings, woodblocks and linocuts.

White might always have drawn as beautifully as Da Vinci but she has never been afraid to show the truth and the pain of her subjects. Her passion for human rights issues and the environment, her love of family, music and nature, galvanize every one of her works in this show. Ranging in price from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, White’s prints are highly desirable and affordable.

While much sought after in Europe and North America, she has to date been underrated in Australia, but not for much longer it seems.

New York critic, Ed McCormack, wrote of her work in the 1990s as “extraordinary … I have not seen narrative works to compare with these in quite some time, perhaps never in recent times.”

White’s 2010 works, particularly the powerful message of ‘She Sees His New Clothes’, demonstrate just how extraordinary an artist she really is.

White’s wonderful 1978 colour lithograph, ‘The Magic Pudding’, was chosen to be the inspiration for the $1,000 FyreGallery Art Quilt Prize in the 2010 Braidwood Quilt Event. The winner will be announced on Friday 26 November and on show during the quilt event weekend.
