My father posed patiently for this portrait, maintaining a warm expression in his brown eyes. He was the caring parent and enjoyed yarning with people. His black hair was greying at the temples when I painted his portrait. He parted his hair down the middle and flattened the curls with Brylcreem. He was chief engineer at the Central Power Station that provided power for the mines at Broken Hill, independently from the town supply. Often, he would work on plans till late in the evening. Dad was diagnosed with type I adult-onset diabetes in his 30s and had to inject himself daily with insulin. On occasions he would pass out from ‘hypos’, needing glucose urgently for revival.
