An unusual interpretation of the Last Supper scene is currently on view at Galerie am Buttermarkt in Cologne. In this depiction Jesus is a woman, an Indigenous Australian. Seated to her left and right are her “women disciples”: women from every continent.
The women’s social status is indicated by their feet. Some wear shoes while others are barefoot. Australian artist Susan White calls the work The First Supper, making clear her rejection of conventional representations of Jesus’ Last Supper.
The exhibition continues until 11 April at Galerie am Buttermarkt, Buttermarkt 23, Cologne.
