Susan Dorothea White Bibliography

The third biennial Tom Bass Prize for Figurative Sculpture brought together 52 finalist sculptors from across Australia at Juniper Hall, Paddington. Established to honour Australian sculptor Tom Bass AM, the prize celebrates figurative sculpture and the continuing influence of the human form on contemporary practice. Susan Dorothea White was represented by In the Grip of Caffeine (2019), carved in Gosford sandstone and presented on a concrete base with coffee beans.

"In the Grip of Caffeine is inspired by the artful rosetta pattern that a barista makes on the surface of a cup of coffee. The grain and colours in the sandstone resemble the texture of milky foam. The rosetta is transformed into a 3-dimensional carving. Swirls morph into hands that grip a face with a look ofof anticipation at the thought of enjoying a cup of coffee." — Susan Dorothea White

The exhibition ran at Juniper Hall, Paddington, 6–22 March 2020; the judges were Ingrid Morley, Alex Seton and Jennifer Turpin, with Wendy Black as curator. The catalogue itself describes this as the third iteration of the prize and says the inaugural exhibition was held in 2016.
