Susan Dorothea White Bibliography

EXTRACT (English translation): A modern depiction by Susan White comes to mind in this connection. Imagine that everything in the picture is exactly as it is in Leonardo: the white table, Jesus in the centre, six disciples on either side, in a beautiful room, and at the back an open window looking out onto the landscape. But in Susan White’s picture, only women are seated at the table. Jesus, too, is a woman, a dark-skinned woman. On closer inspection she can be recognised as Indigenous, an Aboriginal woman from Australia.

The artist herself also comes from Australia. The picture is set in her own time, in the 1980s and 1990s. The women at the table wear colourful clothing from different cultures; they come from different ethnic backgrounds. Each is from a different race. Judas, too, is a woman here. She is the only white woman at the table. She has blonde hair, wears overalls, a purple blouse and sneakers. Judas is one of us: a Western, white woman. She is the one holding the money bag. The Indigenous woman in the centre, who holds nothing in her hands, is betrayed and sold by this white woman.
