Go Granny Go, acrylic symbolic self-portrait painting on wood panel of the cycle of life and overcoming disability by artist Susan Dorothea White
Susan Dorothea White
Go Granny Go, 2003
acrylic on panel, 65 cm

This portrait of myself cycling and framed in a wheel symbolises the cycle of life. Realising that most of my life is behind me, I pedal frantically, my lips forming the word 'Go' as I hear my Grandchildren spurring me on. Although desperate and wide-eyed, my expression is determined - I struggle to make the most of it, with my health problems pointing threateningly from the perimeter that I ride around. I cycle to defy the stereotype of old age and my balance disability, the result of brain tumour surgery.
