"Susan White is constantly sketching from everyday life and it is from the many sketchbooks that she first extracts the material for her compositions." A. Wernig, Munich (1980)

I work in a variety of drawing media: pen and ink, ballpoint, brush, crayon, chalk, pastel, conté, and charcoal. Recently I have developed mixed media techniques in silverpoint and goldpoint, as well as drawing over giclée.

Line is the basis of my drawing and pen is my preferred medium - it is ideal for spontaneous sketching. Capturing the essence in line alone is for me the purest form of expression.

My book Draw Like Da Vinci contains exercises on many different drawing techniques, including goldpoint and chalk on emery paper, and how to draw a sfumato tomato using pastels. The seven essentials of drawing are analysed as the fundamental P's – Perspective, Proportion, Perception, Position, Placement, Planes, Priority.
